Hair is often referred to as our “crown glory”. Nevertheless, 30 million men and 20 million women have thinning or falling hair. There are factors, both internal and externa,l involved in most hair loss that can indeed result in hair improvement, thickness and regrowth. Hair health depends on blood supply, circulation and nutrition.

Trichology, the scientific study of hair and scalp disorders, was founded in London, England in 1902. Scaly problems such as dryness, itchiness, oily scalp, baldness, thinning hair, and hair breakage are problems which many people suffer from, and they would like knowledgeable and professional advice, and where possible, recommended treatment. Therefore, an educational program was developed at the University of Southern California to expand the knowledge of students in the area of trichology to help clients with hair and scalp problems.

Trichologists specialize in treating hair and scalp disorders, and will evaluate a client's hair problems by asking questions about diet, drugs taken within the last four to six months, family history of hair loss, any recent illness and daily care of hair. After examining a client's scalp and hair, he or she may check a few hairs under a microscope. Laboratory tests may be required, which sometimes include an addition of a biopsy test. This would involve removal of a small piece of skin from the scalp.

The trichologist will decide if a treatment is necessary and whether the problem is within his or her realm to treat or should be dealt with by a medical doctor. A trichologist will determine these things: a diagnosis, an etiology, a prognosis and a recommendation for treatment (if possible). The treatment chosen must be vigorously followed. Some forms of hair loss will regrow spontaneously, other forms can be treated successfully. Therefore, if you are concerned about recessive hair loss or dramatic thinning, consult your trichologist. They should be able to get to the “root” of the problem.
